Zoo Run Run! (aka, Prancer's OLD!)

It was a full Reindear contingent at Brookfield Zoo on September 25 to run a new course and to celebrate Prancer's 48th birthday.

We also celebrated Dasher being out of the cast!!  Yay!!  It's been a tough healing process, but we all know that Dasher is tougher than most and we're so happy to see her return to glory. For this race, Dasher and Prancer mentored Cupid, staying by her side the entire race and offering her encouragement (and bad puns about llamas). Cupid's 10 years old and has set her sights on becoming a serious runner. We were thrilled with her performance!  A 10:30 minute mile, which is a whopping two minutes per mile improvement over her Race2Base endeavor. You're on your way, Cupid. We look for great things from you in the future.

Zoo Run Run also marked the return of Blitzen to the race circuit after having Kaden just over a month ago. We were all overjoyed to watch Kaden cross the finish line in his stroller for his first 5K, while proud papa Mayor cheered from the sidelines.

Meanwhile, we anointed Bambi best dressed for this race, sporting a big cat t-shirt and an adorable panda hat. Vixen won FIRST PLACE in her age division. Comet... well, we love Comet!! Welcome, Heena, to our group.  We love your enthusiasm!

After the race it was back to the parking lot for a tailgate birthday party featuring lots of great swag for Prancer (llama jammies, a pocket llama, photo album of family pictures, a running t-shirt, Angry Birds stuffed animals, a teddy bear... and other stuff she's probably forgetting because she's old and the brain isn't as sharp). Yummy cupcakes were provided by Vixen.

Run on, Dears!

Two for September so far

The Bloody Reindear have been busy so far this month!

On September 11, Dasher, Prancer, Bambi, Comet and the kids journeyed to Great Lakes Naval Base in Highland Park, Illinois for the inagural Race2Base Run. Unlike other races, this one was marked by nautical miles and allowed civilians the rare honor of running on a military base with members of our armed forces. To do so on such a somber anniversary was very moving.

Prancer received some bad news in the days leading up to the race. An MRI revealed that the pain she had been feeling in her leg  was diagnosed as a tibial stress fracture-- the doctor ordered a boot no running for several weeks. With the Chicago and New York marathons coming up very shortly, we're all feeling dismayed and are doing our best to keep up Prancer's spirits.

It was decided that we would all walk the 3 nautical mile race. It was a beautiful day in northern Illinois, much like that fateful day when our nation changed forever. The racecourse was very picturesque and surprisingly featured two very steep hills-- one downhill and one uphill. The kids were supposed to do the kids' run, but it didn't work out that way.  Instead, they jdecided to join the adults for the main event.

Bambi decided to run shortly after the start and broke away from the herd, as did Prancer shortly thereafter.  Much to Prancer's delight and surprise, she was joined by 10-year-old Kaylee (Bambi's girl). Due to improper hydration and not a lot of race experience, Kaylee was forced to take a walk break close to two miles in but revved it up considerably and caught up to Prancer again around 2.5 miles. By then the weather was getting slightly warm and Prancer was concerned for Kaylee's well-being, so they walked for about half a  mile, but finished the race strong with an average pace of 12-something miles per minute. So proud of Kaylee for sticking it out like a champion and running with the big Dears!

Bambi finished shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, Justin, Sean and Alexis dropped off before the race's midpoint, leaving Comet and the courageous and determined Dasher to cross the finish line without the little ones.  Congratulations to Dasher for overcoming a huge disappointment and a lot of pain and to heroically participate in the race regardless of her daunting injury!

Less than a week later, Prancer and Vixen celebrated the start of hockey season at the Blackhawks Training Camp Festival's Mad Dash to Madison 5K. Prancer's training has been sub-par all summer and she was fighting a sore throat, so this wasn't her finest effort, coming in at almost 31 minutes. But in true Reindear fashion, Vixen killed the course and ended up with a time around 24 minutes. Way to speed through it, Vixen!!

Next up is the Brookfield Zoo Run 5K a week from tomorrow (September 25, Prancer's birthday!), which will feature the entire herd. Look out, Brookfield! Here come the Reindears!

Our baby reindear is here!

We are very pleased and excited to announce the newest member of our herd, baby Kaden Richard.  Kaden was born on August 18 at 2:56 a.m., 6 pounds 11 ounces, 19 inches.  The Mayor and Blitzen have yet to make public our boy's reindear name or PR, but I'm sure they'll both be as unique and special as the whole family is.  Congrats, Dears!!

Let's frolic and play the Reindear way!

Just because Prancer has been too lazy to post in months doesn't mean that the Dears have been in hibernation!  No way!!  Let's catch you up!

April 3 - Home Team 10K - Prancer sat this one out because of the hoof in a cast, but Dasher (and Dasher's buck), Vixen and Comet represented the herd in fine style.  Afterwards, we all closed down the afterparty!

April 10 - Shamrock Shuffle 8K - Woo hoo!  Prancer's run this too many years in a row to let the cast stop that, so she shuffled along with an appropriated-decorated cast and was thrilled to cross the finish line hand in hand with Bambi, a new runner.  Vixen, Comet and Dasher participated as well.  Blitzen has baby on board, but she and the Mayor were there to cheer us on.  Oh yeah, we had Uncle Dick with us too.  Joyousness!  Once again, the afterparty at Buckingham Fountain and then at Kitty O'Shea's made it one for the record books.

April 23 - Bunny Run 5K - The herd celebrated Comet's birthday by doing this fun run in Lincoln Park.  Prancer fell madly in love with a llama.

May 28 - Soldier Field 10 Miler - Comet's first time!  Wooo hooo, Comet! Vixen was there, but runnin' rogue.  Cold day, so Prancer and Dasher spent the post-race huddled up under a blanket.  Met Dasher's buck and some other friends in Lincoln Park afterwards for a post-race party/crawfish feast.  Yum, or something like that!

June 4 - Girls on the Run 5K - Hot day!  Dasher and Prancer accompanied Dasher's little doe and took time out to jump in the lake-- literally!

Although not official Reindear races, kudos to Vixen and her doe for a fabulous showing at Race to the Taste, and to Dasher for doing us all proud at her "extreme race"-- Running With The Devil half-marathon in Vegas, complete with hills and 95 degree temps.  Dasher, you're a marvel.

Upcoming races are Teb's Troops 5K on July 16 and Champions Race 5K on August 6.

A tiny little member of the herd!

The Bloody Reindear are excited to announce that Blitzen and the Mayor have mated and in September we will have a very Dear new member of the herd!

Names have already been chosen. A male Dear will be called Rudolph and a female Dear will be called Bambi.

Although Blitzen will not be running, she will attend Reindear Games and cheer from the sidelines, along with Prancer. Prancer has been sidelined by a hoof injury.

Meanwhile, Dasher, Vixen and yes-- even Comet-- have been training for the Chicago Home Team Charity Run 10k on April 3. It starts at United Center and finishes at Cellular Field. We're super pumped for the run and especially for the after-party.

Happy Running!

Announcing yet another Treadmill 5K

The Reindears had such fun with their last Treadmill 5K that we decided to go surburban with the concept!  I'm sure this one will be even more hilarious than the first.  Thanks, Dasher, for hosting it and thanks too for the very creative race announcement (see link below).

1st Annual Treadmill 5K

Yay!  After being postponed for a week due to sickness in the herd, today was a banner day for the Bloody Reindear Running Club's inaugural race.

Although we were missing Dancer (family birthday), Blitzen (it's a secret; we'll tell you later), the Mayor (who the hell knows where he was)-- Prancer, Dasher, Vixen and Comet performed with true reindear class and style as we shredded that gym and made it our own.

Packet pickup was at Prancer and Comet's house.  The packet was top-notch and very high end-- here's what it contained:  a tissue, a maxi pad, a Q-Tip, a cough drop, a makeup sponge, a piece of yarn, a coupon for Victoria's Secret and a picture of Bono (ahhhhh, Bono!!!).  Oh yeah, also the race bib and the timing chip.  And "running water," also know as Barefoot Pinot Grigio.

The event was held at LA Fitness Signature Club location on Randolph.  At the pre-race ceremony, all Dears ate their chip-- potato chip timing is the latest and most advanced running techology.  Carey Pinkowski begged us for the secret, but for now we're waiting til our patent request has been finalized.

Time for the treadmills!  Armed with our "running water," we were anxious to begin.  As expected, Dasher was off to a blazing start.  Prancer was determined to have a good showing and bravely set off at a 9:05 minute mile pace, which of course she could not sustain.  Vixen just didn't really look at time at all!!  Comet was more concerned with listening to music.

Here are the results:

Dasher - 24:20
Prancer - 29:29
Vixen - 30-something (she forgot to pay attention to time)
Comet - 43:46 (much improved over previous efforts-- we're so proud of Comet!)

After the race, it was on to White Palace Grill on Roosevelt for the post-race festivities, where we were joined by Donner.  He never runs with us, but is always good for an appearance at the after-party.  Prizes were awarded:

Dasher - $1.00
Prancer - 50 cents
Vixen - a quarter
Comet - a penny

Please note that since we are all earning money by our running, that makes us bona fide professionals.  We are all winners!  An excellent time was had by all... next up-- another indoor 5K at Bally's, hosted by Dasher.  Stay tuned for details.

Comet cometh

Welcome to the reindear, oops the bloody reindear games.  I know that Prancer is very excited about this event.  So let the games begin!

Comet

Welcome to our blog!

Hello!  Prancer here.

I'm pleased to announce the formation of Chicago's hottest running club, Bloody Reindears.  We are a very enthusiastic and fun-loving group of friends who want to motivate each other and share our love of running. Our first race as a group was Lincolnwood Turkey Trot.  We had so much fun together that we followed it up the next month at the Santa Hustle.  At that time, we vowed to do do at least one race per month together.  Since we couldn't find a January race that met our schedules, we decided to create our own-- which led to the formation of our "club" and all that goes along with it-- including this blog!  I encourage all of my fellow reindears to contribute posts, so look forward to hearing from all of us.  Our inaugural race will be on January 30, the 1st Annual Treadmill 5K.  We'll share pictures and results with you soon.  Til then, Happy Bloody Running!!
